How To Keep A Colored Hair Healthy?
There are many options you can utilize to care properly for colored hair at home.
Whether hair is bleached, highlighted, lowlighted or colored, the hair cuticles are ultimately going to be compromised.
When the hair cuticles are compromised the very core of the hair is put at risk.
Studies and history have shown that chemically processed hair (bleach, highlights/lowlights or similar) is more at risk for rips, splits and long term damage. To care for colored hair please there are many steps you can take.
These steps include, but are not limited to the following:
1. You should wait at least a full 72 hours before washing your hair after coloring. Why? That’s how long it takes for the hair cuticles to fully close, which locks in the new color.
2. Minimize how frequently you wet wash.
To extend the life of your colored hair, only wet wash when your hair needs it. Remember that hair color can cause follicles to become dry to very dry and much more prone to breakage and splits.
3. Wait at least 2 weeks before hitting the pool
Pool chlorine is known to effectively strip the cuticles, allowing minerals to get into the shaft and potentially damage your hair color hues. Especially newly colored hair. If you must go into the pool wear a water tight cap.
4. Avoid heat.
This includes hot water in the shower, blow dryers, irons or other heated styling tools (hot irons, curlers or similar). Hot water in the shower pops open the cuticle and allows color to fade or wash away more easily.
5. Avoid using shampoos designed to add volume.
Volumizing shampoo formulas pop open the cuticle and may accelerate color fading.
6. Always finish your wet wash session with a cool/cold water finish.
Cold water seals your hair’s cuticles, reducing moisture loss and hair color fade. This technique will minimize hair color fade with every hair wash, extending the overall life of your hair color.
7. Use a purple shampoo if your hair tends to get brassy.
If your hair tends to get brassy or fade easily, consider using a purple toning shampoo once or twice a month to extend the life of your hair color.
Unfiltered water used in the shower, depending upon where you live, may contain heavy metals and other impurities from pipes or similar. This may leave a tint on your hair. Some common minerals such as calcium and magnesium can damage hair as well.
9. Stay out of the sun or wind.
Sun, surf, salt water, wind and other environmental toxins can fade your beautifully color hair. Always protect your hair with a hat or other tools.
10. Keep your fingers out of your hair.
Touching your hair with your hands or fingers can cause additional damage to fragile colored strands.
When in doubt of the best way to care for your newly colored hair ask your hair professional or do your own research.
