For curly hair types, definition is everything. Unfortunately, sometimes tight defined curls come at the price of stiff, crunchy strands. Instead of going on a hunt for the right hair gel that won’t leave your curls rigid, try making your own gel using flaxseed. Also known as linseed, flaxseed is a great alternative to traditional hair gel. It’s inexpensive, light, and offers way more health benefits.
BENEFITS OF FLAX SEED
- Restores volume and shine
- De-frizzes hair
- Promotes healthy hair growth
- Prevents premature greying
- Mixes well with other oils and butters
- Defines curls while maintaining softness
MAKING YOUR OWN FLAXSEED GEL
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- ¼ cup of whole brown or golden flaxseed (brown flaxseed contains a bit more omega-3 fatty acid)
- 2 cups of water
- Wooden spoon
- air -tight lid container
- Essential oils
- Aloe vera gel (optional)
- Carrier oils (optional)
- Shea butter (optional)
Step 1: Boil
Pour the water and flaxseeds into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium low heat. Stir frequently using a wooden spoon.
Step 2: Strain
Once the boil produces a thick white froth, turn off heat and immediately strain into the container. Be sure the soak your empty saucepan with soap immediately after pouring — it’ll be a hassle to clean if you leave it for later.
Step 3: Mix
Your gel’s consistency should closely resemble egg whites. Let it cool down to warm before adding your essential oil. The purpose of the oil is to preserve the gel, allowing it to last longer. Any essential oil (for example, lavender or peppermint) will do. You don’t have to add the oil but it is suggested.
- For a thicker gel (or to make a custard), add a tablespoon of shea butter, oils, and/or aloe vera gel. Mix with a fork until smooth.
- For a thinner consistency, use more water and less flaxseeds.
Step 4: Store
Seal the container of gel with an air-tight lid and store in refrigerator for up to three weeks (1-2 weeks if you don’t use the essential oils).
Optional: soak flaxseed overnight for a thicker consistency and more absorbency in the hair.
Use your flaxseed gel the way you’d use any other gel. The great thing about this homemade gel is that it’s fast drying, light on the strands, and won’t leave your hair flaky. Apply throughout hair and comb through for a detangled and defined look, or use as a curling custard for defined twist-outs. The style options are endless.
